Getting to Tartu

By Plane:
Tartu has its own airport, but the only way to get there is from Helsinki airport.

The closest big international airport is Lennart Meri Tallinn Airport (TLL) in Tallinn, Estonia's capital city, which is approximately 185 kilometers north of Tartu. From Tallinn, you can then follow one of the methods described below to get to Tartu.

Next closest big airport is Riga Airport (RIX), capital of Latvia, situated approximately 260 km south-west of Tartu.

By Ferry:

If you're coming from Finland or Sweden, you can take a ferry to Tallinn. From Port of Tallinn, you can then follow one of the methods described below to get to Tartu.

Methods to get from Tallinn to Tartu:

  1. Bus: From Tallinn Airport, you can take a shuttle bus directly to Tartu. From Port of Tallinn you can go to Tallinn bus station by taxi or bus. The journey from Tallinn to Tartu takes around 2.5 hours.

  2. Train: You can travel to Tartu by train from Tallinn, which takes around 2 hours. The train journey offers scenic views of the Estonian countryside.

  3. Car: If you're traveling by car from neighboring countries, Tartu is accessible via well-maintained roads. From Tallinn, you can take the E263 highway, which offers a direct route to Tartu and takes approximately 2 to 2.5 hours depending on traffic and road conditions. If you're coming from the south, you can take the E264 highway from Riga, Latvia, which also connects to Tartu.
